'Off the Scales' is a new musical in development, created by Kate McStraw. The concept is born from Kate’s experience of being a Weight Watchers member and having experienced what happens when a group of people, who wouldn’t ordinarily meet, come together to support each other on a weekly basis.

From Jan 2020 - March 2021 I worked closely with Kate as one of her creative collaborators on the first Research & Development phase of the project.

 

I held 1:1 conversations / interviews with up to 20 individuals who have experience of attending a weight-loss group. These conversations formed the basis of our work - we pulled out key points, quotes, thoughts, and used them to inspire the initial devising and writing process.

When it came to the devising process, I was one of the six devising actors. We took part in a 4 day (remote and online) creation period and finished the process with a live online sharing (on Zoom!).

The aim of the project is/was to retell real life and authentic stories and share "what happens when a group of people, who wouldn’t ordinarily meet, come together to support each other?"
